Papers, 1742-1863.

The collection spans the years 1742 to 1836 and consists of twenty-four family letters, documents, notes, and sermons. The folder contains a booklet of genealogical notes on the Maccartys and a eulogy on Experience Cowdin, extracts from Kingston, Mass. Church records refering to Rev. Thaddeus Maccarty's dismissal for espousing the revivalism of George Whitefield (1714-1770), and an essay written by Rev. Maccarty in 1784 as a tribute to his wife, Mary Gatcomb. Of special note is a sixteen-page biographical booklet on Dr. Thaddeus Maccarty written in 1836 by his son-in-law John W. Stiles (1777-1836) for publication in William Lincoln's History of Worcester, Mass. The commentary contains an account of Maccarty's experiences with smallpox cures. Also included in the booklet is correspondence between Lincoln (1801-1843) and Stiles, and a newsclipping exposing a smallpox cure as faith-healing "charlatanary." Two separate envelopes within the folder contain twelve sermons written by Thaddeus Maccarty between 1747 and 1779, including the "Continental's Thanksgiving" sermon of 1775, a sermon on the death of Col. John Chandler (1693-1762), and others noting historic events. An additional separate envelope within the folder contains an interleaved 1745 almanac, the blank leaves containing Thaddeus Maccarty's (1721-1784) diary entries. Along with information about his preaching, there are references to the deaths of two of his sons.
